Established in 1958 at the U.S. Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory (USN/USL) in New London, CT, a small team of Navy trained civilian divers would travel the world, committed to ensuring that the “tip of the spear” would be the best it could be. I didn’t realize it at the time, but when I qualified in scuba in 1968 while serving on USS Stonewall Jackson SSBN634, the door would open to this little known aspect of Navy diving. In 1973, after USN/USL became the Naval Underwater Systems Center (NUSC), I was assigned to the Center’s Intelligence Office. While there, I met Dennie “Mac” McClenny, a World War Two veteran and a retired Navy diver and underwater photographer. Mac was the diving supervisor for this small team of civilian engineers and technicians, and is where I met the author. He was on his way to scuba school at the Groton sub base, and I was about to leave for a NUSC project, diving in the Azores. Available at I highly recommend the book........Bob
